International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad occupies a unique position in the high-level subject Olympiads. The fact that the chemists were the only among scientists, who managed to preserve the traditions of the former All-Union Olympiad, which after the collapse of the Soviet Union held annually, but in two ways: All-Russian Olympiad and International Mendeleev Olympiad.

Since 2004, Mendeleev Olympiads, besides students of the CIS countries and the Baltic States, began participating teams of Bulgaria, Macedonia and Romania.

Mendeleev Olympiad proved to be a powerful tool for the maintenance and development of a common educational space in the participating countries. In particular, for the winners - this is the opportunity to study at Moscow State University and other leading Russian universities. Winners of Mendeleev Olympiads - school graduates are enlisted on the first course of Russian universities without entrance examinations.

The Organizing Committee of the Olympiad and methodical committee are professors and teachers of leading universities, as well as chemistry teachers from different schools of the participating countries. As part of the methodological commission also work Mendeleev Olympiad students and graduate students - winners of previous Mendeleev Olympiads; this helps to keep the tradition and ensures continuity in the years ahead.
